Howe Sound Music Festival Executive Director

The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association has been an integral part of the performing arts community in Squamish for 25 years. We produce an annual music festival for youth in the Sea to Sky School District, and are seeking a part-time Executive Director for an eight-month contract to oversee our 2020 Festival, March 9-13, 2020.

This position reports directly to the Board of Directors. This role matters. It is a unique opportunity to bring your creativity to our established performing arts festival. The Executive Director is effectively the music festival’s first-in-command. The successful candidate must be innovative, with a record of achievement in management, program planning, community liaison, and/or fund development. Experience in the performing arts is an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Assume a leadership role to plan, organize, direct, and oversee the administration, public relations, operations, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising components of the festival.
  • Participate in monthly Board of Directors meetings.
  • Supervise all aspects of mounting the annual festival, including:
    • Hiring adjudicators, booking venues, and scheduling festival classes.
    • Volunteer recruitment and supervision.
    • Developing operational budget and approving all expenditures.
    • Liaise with performing arts studios, teachers, public and private schools (elementary through secondary).
    • Represent The Howe Sound Music Festival at the Provincial level.
    • Maintain current sponsor donations, engage new sponsors, and coordinate the annual fundraising campaign.
    • Produce the annual event program.
    • Oversee all festival events including classes, workshops, highlights concert, local and Provincials registrations.
  • Qualifications:
    • An interest in encouraging excellence in young performing artists.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including creative and grant writing. Strong people skills.
    • Not-for-profit, and related performing arts experience is an asset.
    • Strong administrative and organizational skills with a high degree of attention to detail.

The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is a not-for-profit organization that depends upon the generosity of our donors. Compensation for this role is in the form of an honorarium of $5000 and may include a bonus based on achieving profitability targets, and a commission on successful grant applications. Contract may be extended to include the 2021 Festival at the conclusion of the 2020 event.
